Pyone Cho (alas) Htay Win Aung

 

Pyone Cho was a prominent leader of the Rangoon University Student Union who played a key role in the 1988 student demonstration. He is the brother of Thet Win Aung, another student activist currently serving a 60 year prison term.
1989- Arbitrarily arrested and detained for almost 3 years without trial.
1992- Sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
1996- Prison term extended 7 years after sending a letter to the UN reporting prison conditions and human rights violations inside prison.
1997- Moved to Tharawaddy Prison.
2001- Prison term expired in July, but the regime continued to place him under detention.
2005- Released in November following a power shift among the military clique.

He was arrested August 21, 2007 at his home.


At least 165 activists have been detained since August 19 when peaceful protests began in Burma
