Kyaww Min Yu is the second son of three siblings. His parents are U Tin Yu and Daw Ah Mar Nyunt. When he was young, he studied at a state middle school in Shan division from primary school to middle school. In 1985, he passed the high school exam from No (2) state high school Ka Ma Yut Township. In 1986, he attended Rangoon University (Hlaing Campus) ,majoring in Physics.

He participated in the March and June student movement as a student leader because of the death of Phone Maw (Rangoon Institute of Technology) and the arrests of many students in previous student movements.

Durning the 1989 uprising, he led many campaings and after the 1988 uprising, he became a member of the central committee of the DPNS (student's party). At the same time he took the responsibility of being an organizer at DPNS (central).

At the beginning of his arrest SLORC charged him under section 10 (a) and after 6 months of detention he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labor under section 3 (b) BECAUSE OF TRYING TO INCITE A STATE OF UNREST.
During his prison term he underwent a lot of torture. On September 18 th 1990, many political prisoners held a hunger strike in order to be allowed to read political books and he participated in this struggle. So on September 25th he was seriously hit.


In 1991 a delegation from International Amnesty studied and investigated Insein Prison. At that time Kyaw Min Yu and some political prisoners tried to speak of the dire situation of the political prisoners to the delegation by using connections outside the prison.
In 1994 he was moved from Insein to Thayawaddy prison. In1995, he was taken from Thayawaddy prison to Insein prison by M.I and warders using a public bus. On the way, he was handcuffed.
After arriving in Insein prison, he was again sentenced to 12 years imprisoment with hard labour because of contacting the U.N (Human Right). After extension of his prison term, he was sent to Thayawaddy prison again with two security guards again using a public bus.
He was tortured during his prison term from 1989 to 1999.

On July 6, 2005, he was released tharawaddy prison.

He was arrested August 21, 2007 at his home.

 


At least 165 activists have been detained since August 19 when peaceful protests began in Burma
