Women
Political Prisoners in Burma |
The Regime’s
Women’s Affairs Committee
The regime submitted a report to the United Nations
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
Women (CEDAW) in 2000. The report said that the two women’s
organizations, Myanmar Women’s Affairs Committee and Myanmar
Women Entrepreneurs Association (MWEA), were orking together on
promoting the status of women in Burma.
The heads of these organizations are family members of the military
leaders or businesswomen favored by the regime.
These women’s organizations do not support any women in politics
outside of the regime. Thus, general public does not perceive them
as representing the women in Burma.
They are used as token to the international community by performing
limited social activities commanded by the regime and having no
role in politics.
