Poun-Zan,
Punishment
All political prisoners are taught
how to assume the poun-zan positions when they first enter the
prisons in a seperate room of each prison. There are three regular
poun-zan positions, and one that is used for punishment.
The position
illustrated here is used as punishment. Political prisoners
must assume this position while beaing beaten, and frequently
sharp pins are placed underneath the prisoners' raised feet.
All photos
are reenactments and are available to journalists or others
interested in writing about political prisoners in Burma without
copyright.
