After the bloodshed surrounding May 30th
events, the International Community has focused upon the detention,
health condition and whereabouts of Burmese Democracy leader Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi. According to UN special envoy Mr. Razili Ismail,
who had the permission to see her at an "official guest house"
in Rangoon where she was being kept under "protective custody",
she was well and in good spirits. It appeared that she had not
been physically hurt.
However, according to the current news
and information available since the May 30 violence, confusion
as to her whereabouts has arisen. It had not been possible to
confirm whether Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was being held at a military
camp or if she had been moved and further detained under Article
10 (A) of State Protection Act. The UK's Foreign Office Minister,
Mike O'Brien stated yesterday that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was now
being held at the notorious Insein Jail, just outside Rangoon.
Being detained under Article 10 (a) of the 1975 Act is completely
contradictory to the SPDC's claim that she is being held under
'protective custody'. Instead she has been arrested without trial,
without access to family or consultation with lawyers, for up
to 5 years.
If the source is to be confirmed that she
is detained in Insein Jail, the possible and only place might
be a newly erected building inside the prison. This has reportedly
been intended to detain Daw Aung San Suu Kyi since building finished
in 1997. This small construction of three rooms is situated between
the women's ward and the gallows, which can be seen in the attached
diagrams.
