Political Prisoner Aung Kyaw Oo's Health is deteriorating

28 August 2004

Aung Kyaw Oo, a political prisoner in Tharyarwaddy Prison, who is suffering from liver and kidney problems, has just been transferred to the Guard-ward of Rangoon General Hospital.
Aung Kyaw Oo was arrested in December 1991 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Later in 1993, as a result of the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) Order 1/93, his sentence was lowered to 10 years. Unfortunately he was later given an additional 7 years imprisonment because he, along with other 23 political prisoners, secretly submitted a report about human rights violations in Insein prison to the United Nations Commission for Human Rights Special Rapporteur on Burma. Now he remains in prison serving the latter prison term.
"Aung Kyaw Oo has suffered from additional liver and kidney problems because he did not receive proper treatment while suffering from malaria." revealed Zaw Htun who was arrested with Aung Kyaw Oo, and released in February 2004 from Tharawaddy prison.
Tate Naing, the Secretary of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), said that political prisoners' health situation are getting worse and worse owing to the gradual murderous system of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).
Two days ago, another political prisoner from the same prison, named U Htin Aung, was transferred to Tharyarwaddy General Hospital due to serious illness.
