Date: November 02, 2004.
Zaw Myo Htet (a) Zaw Zaw was unfairly sentenced in July 2003
to
lifetime imprisonment in the Central Insein Prison. He passed
away on the 19th October due to an Amoebic Hepatitis disease.
He was suffering from tuberculosis and Amoebic Hepatitis disease
inside the prison therefore the prison authorities decided
to send
him to the prison hospital on the 28th September this year.
His
condition continued to deteriorate, so he was later transferred
to
the Rangoon General Hospital emergency department for
treatment, but sadly he passed away there.
While he was hospitalized, the authorities never helped in
anyway
to save his life. He died at the age of 28.
Zaw Myo Htet (a) Zaw Zaw was accused by the military regime
of
attempting to assassinate the governing leaders and of rallying
people against the State. He was innocent of these crimes
and
was therefore unfairly sentenced to life imprisonment.
Later, relating to the death of Zaw Myo Htet (a) Zaw Zaw,
Bo Kyi,
the joint-secretary of the Assistance Association for the
Political
Prisoners (Burma) stated: "With reference to the previous
case
of
Ko Than Zaw, who was unlawfully and unfairly sentenced to
death,
for the Tanyin Oil Refinery bomb explosion, the case of Zaw
Myo
Htet (a) Zaw Zaw is the second life imprisonment case which
has
been unfairly sentenced by the authorities. This imprisonment
was
a deliberate attempt by the authorities to affect the mental
stability
of this man. Furthermore, they did not provide enough support,
medical treatment or medicine which ultimately led to his
death.
This brings the death toll of political prisoners inside Burma
to
nearly 100."
Currently, to date, there are 93 political prisoners who have
passed away serving their sentences in prisons across Burma.
