Political
Prisoner Suffers from Serious Health Condition |
-
Date: March 22, 2005
It has been reported that political prisoner Ko Nyan Win,
who was
sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in 1998, is suffering from
a
serious health condition in Tharawaddy prison.
Due to inadequate medical care within the prison, he is suffering
from a kidney disease and his urinary organs and intestines
have
swollen; because of his condition, Ko Nyan Win cannot eat
prison
food. Furthermore, he has to pay for his own medicine and
treatment.
He was arrested and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment,
accused of being involved in the writing and publishing of
a book
named "History of Student Movements in Burma", and
for making
contact with opposition groups based along the Thai-Burma
border. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment under Article
122/1 of the High Treason Act, in 1989. His original sentence
had
been reduced to 10 years imprisonment according to the regime's
1993 prison parole order. He was released in 1997 but was
arrested and sentenced again in 1998.
Tate Naing, secretary of the Assistance Association for Political
Prisoners (Burma) said, "It is clear that the regime
has been
intentionally suppressing political prisoners, by prolonging
their
detention and not providing adequate medical care".
