Political Prisoners Have Been Sent To Solitary Confinement and
Refused Family Visits in Mandalay Prison |
-
Date: 5 April 2005.
On the 8 March 2005, three political
prisoners serving long term sentences complained to the jail
wardens about the inadequate dhal which they had been continually
served. However, the authorities did not improve the dhal
and those who had complained were sent to solitary confinement
for punishment; additionally they were refused visits from
their families for an unspecified amount of time. Those political
prisoners punished were Ko Myo Min Zaw, Maung Maung Myat and
Ko Kyaw Nyunt.
On the 26 March, when the prison warden checked the jail,
two political prisoners were punished because their ponzan
position was not 'correct' in accordance with prison authority
expectations. They were sent to solitary confinement and were
not allowed to receive any visits from their families; again,
for an unspecified amount of time. The political prisoners
punished were Ko Bo Bo and Ko Ye Htun Kyaw.
On the 30 March their families came to visit them, but were
refused entry to the prison.
With respect to this case, the secretary of the Assistance
Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) said "these
people will have to face either a little or a lot of persecution.
This is evidence showing that the authorities are resolutely
breaking political prisoners' rights. It demonstrates how
political prisoners are oppressed and particularly maltreated
within the prisons.
Two months ago the National League for Democracy member, U
Shwe Maung, was punished and placed in solitary confinement;
he continues to remain there today.
