Reports have been recieved that Dr. Than Nyein, a political prisoner
in Prome (Pyay) prison, who has been struggling with several serious
chronic illnesses, is also suffering from an additional eye problem
(cataract), as a consequence of the conditions of his detention.
His family has requested that he be admitted
to hospital outside of the prison, but this request has not been
granted by the prison authorities.
Dr. Than Nyein has been suffering from
long-term illnesses of the stomach, liver, prostate, and chronic
hypertension with all the consequences these illnesses entail.
He has not been allowed to seek proper treatment for more than
one year.
The release of Dr. Than Nyein, who was
jailed under the 1975 State Protection Act 10 (A), is overdue
and the authorities continue to detain him.
Meanwhile, another prisoner U Aung Pe,
a former private tutor, was granted permission to seek treatment
at the hospital outside for his hernia disease on 15th of this
month after repeated request.
